Sri Lanka · An astrological journey
Your chart is the construction plan you were born with. Mine led me to an island.
For most of my life I didn’t know how to read my own natal birth chart. I just knew I was living a life that didn’t fit. Eighteen years in my family’s fire protection business. A good paycheck. A title. And a feeling I couldn’t name.
When I finally learned to read my chart, it didn’t predict my life. It explained it. That’s why I think everyone should learn theirs.

What my chart was telling me
I grow when life shakes me loose, and I find myself far from home.
I have a Sagittarius rising. The rising sign is the doorway of the chart, and Sagittarius is the sign of the traveler, the student, the one who needs to see the world to understand it. Its ruler, Jupiter, sits right in my 1st house of self, next to Uranus, the planet of sudden change.
I also have a triangle of fire in my chart. I spent eighteen years protecting buildings from fire. I never stopped to think I might be made of it.
Then there’s timing. In Hellenistic astrology, every year of your life lights up one house of your chart. This is called a profection. At 42 I was in my 7th house year, the house of other people and one-on-one relationships. That year I lost lifelong relationships, including my own family’s. And I gained new ones.
In December 2025, the hardest month of my life, I begged the universe to show me how another family loves.
In January I flew to Sri Lanka with no return ticket. I wasn’t on vacation. I had left my life.
And Sri Lanka showed me.
A country that still lives by the sky
Every full moon, the whole country stops.
In America, astrology is something we check on our phones and keep to ourselves. In Sri Lanka, it’s part of everyday life. Every full moon, called Poya, is a public holiday. Families dress in white and go to temple. People ask an astrologer before they marry, move or open a business.
While I was there, I was taken to a Vedic astrologer. He wouldn’t take my money. He looked at my chart and told me to go home to my family, start small, and launch my business on July 7, 2027.
I had been studying the sky alone in North Carolina. Here was a whole country that never stopped paying attention to it.

The four elements, in real life
Every chart holds all four. I walked through them.
Most of us lean hard on one or two elements and ignore the rest. On the island I moved through all four, in this order.
Water · How we feel
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces · The south coast
On the south coast I opened the curtains and there was the Indian Ocean. A family took me in as one of their own. One of the brothers told me, “We don’t leave family.” When I left, their mother pressed her face to both sides of my neck and told me to just stay.
Water is where we let ourselves feel. I had shut that off for years.

The wild part
I was born with Neptune on my ascendant. Neptune is the planet of the sea, of dreams, and of illusions dissolving. Because it was rising when I was born, its line runs through North Carolina, where I spent eighteen years believing my family’s business was my future.
Astrocartography is a map of where each planet’s energy lands on the earth. Follow my Neptune line around the world and it comes down the southwest coast of Sri Lanka as Neptune setting, right where I spent most of my time.
The dream rose at home. I watched it set on the island.
I didn’t pick that coast off a map of my chart. I just went where life pulled me, and the line was already there.
Earth · What we build
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn · The rainforest
I knew how to build. Purchase orders, materials, jobs, money. In the rainforest I learned a different kind of earth. The best massage of my life cost ten dollars. People with far less than most Americans shared their tea, their meals and their homes.
On the last day of the Wood Snake year, I joined the family to offer food to the monks, the way it’s been done for generations.

Air · How we think
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius · The hill country
In the hill country the air turns cool and the mist moves through the valleys. That’s where my mind finally got quiet. I stopped reading my chart like a set of instructions and started reading it like a map.
The island didn’t save me. It just gave me enough space to finally hear myself.

Fire · What drives us
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius · Kandy and Poya
In Kandy, the drums at the Temple of the Tooth play three times a day while people line up carrying blue water lilies and jasmine. Every full moon, the whole country stops.
I had always seen fire as something to control. Sri Lanka showed me fire is also what moves us to act and begin again. That full moon is where the Poya Moon Social Club of the North Carolina Triangle began.

Why you should learn your chart
Stop forcing a life that was never yours.
Not to predict your future. Not to hand your life over to a horoscope. To understand the construction plan you were born with.
We spent years chasing paychecks and titles instead of asking what we were actually built for. Your chart won’t make the choice for you. But it will show you why some rooms always felt wrong, why some seasons hit so hard, and that those seasons end.
I didn’t buy a horoscope. I bought time. And I finally learned to read my own construction plan.
Going back · April 2027
A new year under a different sky.
In Sri Lanka, the new year, Aluth Avurudu, comes in mid-April when the Sun enters Aries. Same zodiac wheel, a different way of counting it. There’s a pause between the old year and the new, called nonagathe, when work stops and people go to temple. Then, at the auspicious minute, families light the hearth and boil milk until it spills over for abundance. People say the koel bird is calling in the new year.
I’m going back for it, and I’m bringing women like me. We’ll learn our charts where the sky still matters, with local guides, the Lions and Lionesses of the island, who love their home and want to share it.
No filters. Waterfalls you stand under. Ginger tea with strangers who don’t stay strangers long.
