Hellenistic astrology · The basics

Astrology is about the here and now. It’s the language of real life.

Love, work, family, money, purpose. Astrology is a symbolic language that speaks to all of it. For a while we lost the translation. Now it’s coming back.

What it is, and what it isn’t

Astrology is not a religion. You don’t have to believe in it, pray to it or join anything. In America it got pushed behind closed doors, next to faith, like something you keep to yourself. In Sri Lanka it sits out in the open, in everyday life, next to the calendar and the weather.

It’s not magic, and it’s not perfect. Learning your natal birth chart will not change your life overnight. It’s information. It takes real critical thinking to see the patterns, check them against your own life, and decide what to do with them.

Think of it as the construction plan you were born with. Nobody ever taught us how to read it.

Reading it won’t build the house for you, but it shows you where the walls are, where the light comes in, and why some rooms always felt wrong.

I’m not here to read your life to you. I’m here to teach you the language so you can read it yourself. We use Hellenistic astrology with whole sign houses, the ancient Greek tradition behind the Western astrology we know today, kept simple.

What is a natal birth chart?

A map of the sky the minute you were born.

Natal means birth. You were born with numbers that mean something: a date, a time and a place. Together they make a map of the sky at the minute you were born, drawn as a wheel. It never changes. It’s your construction plan for life.

The wheel is your life split into 12 rooms. Those are the houses. Your rising sign is the 1st house: you, your body and your life. The next sign is your 2nd house: your money. Then it keeps going around the wheel, one room for every part of your life.

The planets are who’s in the room. The signs are how they act. The houses are where it’s happening.

It’s a puzzle you piece together with your own life experiences. To pull yours, you need three things: your birth date, your birth time and the city you were born in.

Why Hellenistic

I fell for pop astrology first. Most of us do.

Pop astrology is the horoscope for your Sun sign, the daily notification on your phone, the meme about your sign. It’s built to sell, and it’s made to be found. There’s no shame in finding it first.

I paid for an astrology course that promised me a business. It gave me a template. Then I sat with astrologers in Sri Lanka who read my chart a completely different way. For a few months, I didn’t believe any of it. I went back to the oldest version I could find, whole sign Hellenistic astrology, and it was the first time my chart made sense.

I like it because it’s simple, and because it shows its reasoning, so I can check it instead of just believing it.

The grammar

Every placement answers three questions.

Who: the planet

The character that’s talking: the King, the Mother, the Messenger, the Lover, the Warrior, the Benefactor or the Elder.

How: the sign

The style it speaks in. Fast or slow, warm or cool, out loud or quiet.

Where: the house

The part of your life it shows up in: home, work, love, friends, travel.

Read one with me

My Moon is in Aries in my 5th house.

The Mother (how I feel and what I need) + Aries (fire that starts things: fast, direct, first) + the 5th house (creating, play, children). Put together: I feel things fast and say them out loud, then move on, and I come alive when I’m making something.

The pieces

Planets, signs and houses. Your key.

Keep this page open next to your chart and match the symbols up.

The seven planets: the who

The ancients worked with the seven lights you can see with your own eyes. Venus and Jupiter help. Mars and Saturn challenge: hard, not evil. The Sun and Moon are the two lights. Mercury takes on the nature of whatever it’s with.

♄︎SaturnThe ElderTime, limits, land, building slowlyCapricorn, Aquarius

Find your guide. The planet that rules your rising sign rules your whole chart.

My rising is Sagittarius, so Jupiter, the Benefactor, rules mine: faith, teaching and the long road. That’s how astrology took me to the other side of the world.

The twelve signs: the how

Every sign is one element and one mode.

Fire

Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Action and spirit.

Earth

Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. The body, work, building.

Air

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. The mind, words, connection.

Water

Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Feeling, memory, intuition.

The three modes: Cardinal signs start the season. Fixed signs hold it. Mutable signs turn it into the next one.

SignElementModeRulerHow it acts
♈︎AriesFireCardinalMarsStarts things. Fast, direct, first.
♉︎TaurusEarthFixedVenusHolds steady. Comfort, beauty, patience.
♊︎GeminiAirMutableMercuryCurious. Talks, learns, adapts.
♋︎CancerWaterCardinalMoonProtects. Home, feelings, care.
♌︎LeoFireFixedSunShines. Heart, pride, loyalty.
♍︎VirgoEarthMutableMercuryRefines. Details, service, skill.
♎︎LibraAirCardinalVenusBalances. Fairness, partnership, grace.
♏︎ScorpioWaterFixedMarsGoes deep. Intensity, loyalty, truth.
♐︎SagittariusFireMutableJupiterTravels. Faith, teaching, the long road.
♑︎CapricornEarthCardinalSaturnBuilds. Ambition, structure, time.
♒︎AquariusAirFixedSaturnThinks ahead. Community, ideas, independence.
♓︎PiscesWaterMutableJupiterDissolves. Dreams, compassion, faith.

So Aries is the fire that sparks, Leo the fire that keeps burning, Sagittarius the fire that travels.

My Big Three: Sagittarius rising, Aries Moon, Libra Sun.

Sagittarius rising is mutable fire. My whole chart is built to move: travel, teach, and carry the fire somewhere new. That’s how I ended up on the other side of the world.

My Aries Moon is cardinal fire. I feel it first and I act on it fast. When something moves me, I start.

My Libra Sun is cardinal air. I start things too, but through people: bringing them together, looking for what’s fair, making it beautiful.

My Venus and Mars in Leo are fixed fire. What I love, I keep loving. What I fight for, I keep fighting for.

Put together: I start, I travel, and I don’t let go of what I love.

The twelve houses: the where

Your rising sign is your whole 1st house. The next sign around the wheel is your 2nd, and so on to twelve. No math, no tables.

HouseWhat it holds
1stYou, your body, your life, how you begin
2ndMoney, livelihood, what you own
3rdSiblings, neighbors, short trips, everyday talk
4thHome, parents, land, your roots
5thChildren, pleasure, creativity, joy
6thWork, illness, the daily grind
7thPartners, marriage, open rivals
8thDeath, inheritance, shared money
9thLong journeys, faith, higher learning
10thCareer, reputation, what you’re known for
11thFriends, allies, community, hopes
12thLoss, hidden enemies, isolation, healing

The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are the four corners, the loudest houses in the chart. Planets there show up in your life where you and everyone else can see them.

The generational planets

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto belong to your whole generation.

A misty lake at night framed by palm trees

The ancients couldn’t see them. They move so slowly they sit in one sign for years, so everyone born around you shares the same sign. That sign speaks to your generation, not to you alone. The house they land in still matters in your chart, just not as much as it seems.

♅︎Uranus: sudden change wherever it falls.

♆︎Neptune: fog, dreams and illusions dissolving.

♇︎Pluto: here to change the world, together. Pluto in Capricorn built the systems. Pluto in Aquarius is bringing us back to each other.

This is where critical thinking comes in. If an app tells you Pluto explains everything about you, ask how many million people were born with it in the same sign.

Why a triangle

Astrology is a pattern. Mine is a triangle of fire.

My rising sign is Sagittarius, so my 1st, 5th and 9th houses are Sagittarius, Aries and Leo, all three fire signs. Every corner has planets in it: Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune in my 1st, the Moon in my 5th, Venus and Mars in my 9th. Draw a line between them and you get the fire triangle. It’s the same triangle in this brand, next to the North Carolina Triangle I grew up in and Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.

Then it becomes a kite. Across from my Aries Moon sits Libra, my 11th house of friends and community, holding my Sun. Libra is air, and air feeds fire, so it reaches both other corners and pulls the whole triangle toward one point, like the tail of a kite. Gemini, my 7th house of partners and one-on-one, makes a second tail with my North Node.

A triangle of fire on its own just burns in a circle. The kite gives it somewhere to go: out to people, through words, in community. That’s why everything I build is about gathering.

My Sun is in Libra, but I’ve always felt more Sagittarius. That’s because my energy pulls from my 1st house, where three planets sit. You may identify with another sign too. Look for the house where your planets gather.

Where to start

Start with your Big Three.

You need your birth date, your birth time and your birth city, because your rising sign changes about every two hours.

Shells arranged in a spiral on a table by the beach

Rising

Who you are. It sets up every house and names your guide planet.

Moon

How you feel and what you need to feel safe.

Sun

How you shine. It’s one planet in one house, so it isn’t always the sign that holds the most of you.
